Contact the Pacific Seafarer's Net
We welcome inquiries from vessels planning ocean passages, amateur radio operators interested in maritime service, and anyone seeking information about our network's communication services.
For Vessels at Sea
If you're planning an ocean passage and want to participate in our daily roll call, we encourage you to learn about getting on the roll call before your departure. Proper preparation ensures smooth communication once you're underway.
Before Departure
Vessels should prepare their amateur radio stations for maritime mobile operations well before departure. This includes verifying equipment functionality, understanding net procedures, and registering vessel information with net control operators.
We recommend joining practice roll calls while still in port to familiarize yourself with net procedures and communication protocols. This preparation significantly improves your ability to check in successfully once at sea.
For Amateur Radio Operators
Licensed amateur radio operators interested in supporting maritime communications can contribute in several ways. We particularly welcome operators interested in serving as net controllers or scribes.
Volunteer Requirements
Net control operators should hold valid amateur radio licenses with appropriate HF privileges. Experience with single sideband operation and maritime mobile communications is valuable but not required—we provide training and mentorship for interested operators.
Scribes assist with logging positions, maintaining databases, and updating tracking websites. This role can be performed remotely and requires attention to detail and basic computer skills. It's an excellent way to contribute even if you cannot operate on HF bands.
For Families and Friends
Families of sailors participating in our network can monitor vessel positions and progress through our tracking systems. While specific contact information varies by vessel, the daily roll call provides regular updates on position, course, and welfare.
Position Reports
Position reports taken during roll calls are posted to vessel tracking websites, typically updated daily. These reports include latitude, longitude, course, speed, and weather conditions, providing comprehensive information about your loved one's voyage progress.
Technical Questions
For technical questions about amateur radio maritime mobile operations, equipment requirements, or frequency coordination, we recommend consulting the ARRL Maritime Mobile resources which provide comprehensive technical information.
Equipment Recommendations
Vessels equipping for ocean passage should consider HF single sideband transceivers with appropriate power output, efficient antenna systems designed for maritime installation, and backup power sources to maintain communications capability. Our offshore boats page provides additional equipment guidance.
Emergency Communications
In emergency situations, any vessel can call for assistance on our net frequencies regardless of registration or licensing status. Life-threatening emergencies receive immediate priority, and we will coordinate with the Coast Guard and other rescue services as appropriate.
Emergency Procedures
Our emergency guidelines provide detailed information about how we handle emergency traffic and coordinate rescue operations. All mariners should review these procedures before undertaking ocean passages.
